Today Eddy Leviten was interviewed by BBC Breakfast from the heart of York to discuss the vital role of the tourism industry in the UK Economy. During the segment, he highlighted that tourism is a massive economic driver for the nation, contributing £147 billion annually and supporting over 2.4 million jobs across every region and constituency.
With a notable shift toward #staycations this summer – driven in part by traveller caution regarding travel uncertainty in the Middle East, there is a significant opportunity to support our domestic businesses.
Regarding policy, while the Tourism Alliance welcomes the government’s announcement of a temporary VAT cut to 5% for family attractions and meals, Eddy emphasised the need for a permanent 10% rate to ensure the UK remains competitive against its European neighbours. He also urged the Government to prioritise investment in the sector, to foster growth and secure essential job opportunities for young people entering the workforce. He also called for investment by Government into marketing the UK as a global destination; the cuts to VisitBritain’s budget are not helpful.
